TakeOver: Celebrate!

An evening celebrating York’s young people

Hannah co-directed this performance with Emily Wilson-Knight. After contacting and working with 5 local groups, Hannah ran workshops about the environment and devising to create short pieces of performance that was special to each group. With support from York Theatre Royal’s brilliant technical team, the show ran in a carousel fashion with each group performing, complimented by beautiful dance routines.

The Show

Each piece in this show was personal to the group, however the overarching theme was celebration. We celebrated the young people of York, celebrated the world and our environment, and celebrated TakeOver Festivals 10th birthday.

  • Accessible Arts and Media taught the signs to their song ‘Celebrate’ then performing it with the audience. Their members also performed a rap and a song they wrote.

  • Door 84 performed a scripted piece about being stuck in an environemntally themed escape room.

  • York Theatre Royal’s Access All Areas performed a piece about looking after our environment, including a protest march and tweets from Donald Trump!

  • Members of York and Harrogate Guide and Scout Gang Shows created a script about 2 people from the future who time travelled to the current day. They couldn’t believe that the environment was not all destroyed- yes we still have fish!

  • Lastly, Northern Dance Academy performed 4 gorgeous pieces of dance. As well as big group numbers, a small company performed a piece of ballet which was scripted to music from Blue Planet.

Reviews

“absolutely brilliant. Joyous… such a lovely, inclusive, friendly and smoothly run piece of work.”

— Juliet Forster, Associate Director, York Theatre Royal.

“Thank you so much for asking us to be apart of it, it was great to see so many young people involved in an inclusive and fun event which gave them an opportunity to work together and perform on stage. The feedback from parents was really positive and thoroughly enjoyed watching the performance. Even during rehearsals, the interaction and support between all five groups involved was amazing to watch. ”
